Preventive Archaeology on the Târgu Jiu Bypass

Preliminary data

Introduction

Building the future while respecting the past, this is the motto under which one could resume the wrap-up of a project particularly important for the city of Târgu Jiu.

The preventive Archaeology, carried out intermittently during a period of approximately seven months and they targeted the six sites revealed by the archaeological analysis of November 2014. The main objective of the research was the retrieval of the historical artefacts from the perimeter to be affected by the future works of the construction site to the “Târgu Jiu Bypass” investment objective, in order to provide the archaeological discharge certificate of the site.

The research methodology

In the areas containing archaeological sites, digging sites were mechanically opened (surfaces), by embankment bucket excavator. The archaeological material resulting from the research was carefully washed at the Gorj County Museum, properly packaged and labelled. The primary data for the general topographic plan was recorded with the assistance of a topography team, made available by the construction company, and the topographic landmarks were processed and assembled in GIS by SC Vanderlay Arheo SRL.

The discovered materials, partially studied and yet to be completely restored, together with the most important habitat elements of the sites, are gathered in the exhibition called PLACES. PEOPLE. THINGS.
